UK company launches virtual private servers

A small UK company based in the West Midlands has launched a way for single users and small companies to use inexpensive virtual private servers (VPSs) for conducting business or to run private websites.
SupaNames's VPS service was launched on Thursday and includes virtual servers running on Microsoft Windows or, for a cheaper price, on Linux. The Linux version starts at £14.99 a month and the Windows version at £34.99.
According to Macsen Galvin, development director of SupaNames, a low-cost web service on a VPS, "offers a good halfway house between the expense of a dedicated line and the low speed of other choices".

"It is not the same as a dedicated line but it is like having one," Galvin told ZDNet.co.uk. "There is an appropriate level of contention depending on the level of service people want, and that makes it the right choice for many people."
Linux-based VPSs are set up to work with the open-source Ruby programming language and the Ruby on Rails programming framework and run on Ubuntu 6.06, while Windows servers are equipped with SQL Server 2005 and ASP.net 2.0 running on 64-bit Windows 2003 Server.
The VPSs have integrated control panels for control with root access. They included unlimited bandwidth, the company says, and features such as SMS alerts and webmail, and are Secure Socket Layer-ready. The company also said that users can back up their data daily at no additional cost and have their own unique IP address, and the service offers "an average response time of less than 30 minutes".
